About the Project

The currently implemented project - Parish Registers of the Lublin Region from the Turn of the 18th and 19th Centuries: Inventory, Accessibility, and Study - funded under the National Programme for the Development of the Humanities (NPRH/DN/SN/496564/2021/10), constitutes a continuation of the completed NPRH research grant "The Population of the Historical Lublin County, 1594–1900, in the Light of Parish Register Records" (11H 12 0505 81) [read more]

The research focuses on several main objectives. First, the project aims to conduct a supplementary inventory and cataloging of parish registers from the Lublin region, followed by the creation of digital copies and their online dissemination. The digitization will cover all registers maintained from 1797 onwards according to the so-called Austrian format (the first stage of the project covered registers created prior to 1797). The registration principles introduced at that time remained in force until 1810, although some parishes continued to use the Austrian form until the 1860s. These registers are preserved exclusively in parish archives. The digitization campaign will be carried out in the following parish archives: Abramowice, Baranów, Bełżyce, Biskupice, Bochotnica, Bychawa, Bychawka, Bystrzyca, Chodel, Czemierniki, Czerniejów, Częstoborowice, Dys, Fajsławice, Firlej, Garbów, Gołąb, Kamionka, Karczmiska, Kazimierz Dolny, Kiełczewice, Kijany, Klementowice, Kluczkowice, Konopnica, Końskowola, Krasienin, Krężnica Jara, Krzczonów, Kurów, Lubartów, Lublin (St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist Parish; St. Nicholas Parish), Łańcuchów, Łęczna, Markuszów, Matczyn, Mełgiew, Michów, Niedrzwica Kościelna, Opole Lubelskie, Ostrów Lubelski, Parczew, Piaski, Piotrawin, Puchaczów, Ratoszyn, Rudno, Serniki, Targowisko, Wąwolnica, Wilkołaz, Wilków, Włostowice, Wojciechów, Wysokie, and Żyrzyn.

The next stage involves the creation of a database reflecting the elements contained in the parish registers. Given the breadth of information collected, the data will be of value to researchers across various disciplines. Particularly promising are the prospects for historical-demographic, onomastic, and biographical research (the parish registers under study contain references to many prominent figures and their families, including Wincenty Pol, Henryk Wieniawski, and Rev. Franciszek Ksawery Mikołaj Zabłocki). The resulting database will also serve as a primary source of knowledge for genealogists, supporting both professional historians and individuals reconstructing their family histories and preserving the memory of their ancestors. A printed series of catalogues of births, marriages, and deaths will be published. These publications, which will take the form of source extracts, will include detailed information enabling precise identification of individuals. The series will be supplemented with glossary annexes. Additionally, a statistical report describing phenomena related to natural population movement and population structure in parts of Western Galicia will be prepared for publication.

Parallel to this project, a complementary scientific initiative - Family in Sources [Enter] - is being carried out. It includes, among other components, a digital repository of early modern parish registers from the former Urzędów County.
